Transmission media are divided into two types: wired and wireless.

Among wired transmission media, cables transfer data by using electricity(Twisted-pair & Coaxial) or light(Fiber Optic). There are three term that related to electricity transmission:

Optic fiber used light to transmit data. There are beams of light used in fiber optic transfer data. The bouncing angels are different for each string of light, different angel represents different bits. Therefore, different bits can be sent simultaneously.

Wireless transmission media use radio signals to transmit data. Bits is send to Router and to other devices.The router first translates binary bits into Radio waves in different frequency. It is a two way transmission between the computer and the router.

The above table is made by myself. This table explicitly illustrates the difference and similarities between four types of wired transmission media so I am not going to explain them again. But you should pay attention to the meanings of security and reliability since they are quite similar. Security refers to the physical break down, extend, attack, steal of cables. Reliability deals with the degradation of analogous signals. (Photos in the above table derive from multiple websites, see works cited at the bottom)

Comparison between Wired & Wireless

屏幕快照 2016-11-04 上午9.39.17.pngThe scale of the above table is from 1 to 3. 3 is the best and 1 is the worst. The reason way that wireless transmission media is not reliable is because other electrical waves can affect the use of wireless transmission.

Comparison between Microwave and Satellite

Microwave roars a specific small area. All devices within this area can have short-range communication with each other. For example, TV and Radio Broadcast. Satellite conducts point-to-point communication over long distance. For example, ships and aircrafts. The comparison of Microwave’s and Satellite’s speed, security, and reliability are explicit in the poster so I am not going to explain again. For their cost, both microwave’s and satellite’s cost are independent to distance. The cost of microwave depends on how much area the radio wave covers. The cost of satellite depends on  how many point-to-point connections there are.

Personal Reflection: After learning this class, I can recognized different cables we used in daily life. I also realized the different uses and characteristics of those different cables. For example, the connects to the computer’s Ethernet NIC card and the router is the secure UTP/STP or the even faster Fiber Optic cable.
